Rear End Refinishing and Back Seat Floor Repair (October 25, 2004)

Here are pictures of the rear end ofter being sand blasted and coated with POR15. Currently the PRO15 gives it a semi gloss black finish. I will most likely coat it with POR15 Gloss Black topcoat before I reinstall in. Here are also pictures of the area under the back seats that rusted out. Unfortuanately there is not a aftermarket repair panel for this section of floor. Because of this I was forced to make patches to repair the rust areas. I decided to make them look as original as possible for the outside. My goal is to make the repair look 100% original from the outside. I am not as concerned about some weld beads and smoothness on the inside because it will be covered with sound deadener and carpet. On the outside it will be seen.
Status photos as of 10/25/2004:
Here is the rear differential with 30 years of rust, grime and old paint removed. I have also removed the drum brakes and plan to replace them with 2000 Camaro LS1 disc brakes.
Here is ID stamped into the rear. I think this posi rear came from a late 70's Trans Am or Firebird.
Here is the rear end, mounting brakets, leaf springs and subframe connectors covered with POR15.
Here is a shot of the rust damage in the area under the back seats. The rust formed between a few seams in the floor. There are 4 small areas that needed to be patched.
Here are shots of the progress of installing the patches. The yellow in the patches is the reflection off of my yellow drop light.
Here is the completed right side patch job in the interior. A little ZeroRust and it will look great.
Here is the patched area from the outside. These will be ground smooth and look perfect once they are painted.
Here is the completed patched area from the outside. A coat of ZeroRust and it will look good as new and the repair will be barely detectable.
Here are a couple of shots of the stripped floor pan under the back seats. This needs a little more cleaning then a coat of ZeroRust.
